Schnauzer Critique
I would like to thank the Northern Schnauzer Club for inviting me to Judge Schnauzers at their November show. It is an honour to have my First CC appointment at a breed club show, they have been supportive throughout my show and judging career. I especially would like to thank my steward of the day Colin Langan, who was amazing and did a marvellous job on his own and supported me through out. I also want to thank the exhibits for supporting me on the day. On a whole I found the breed to have good temperaments and most of the exhibits where happy, with fussy exuberant puppies. However I found many dogs lacking in brisket and depth of chest. Dogs moved freely in profile but we need to be mindful of rear movement and bites for the future.
Minor Puppy Dog
1st Mr R Taylor’s, Maidluns Shut Up And Drive, lovely head and expression, dark eye with moderate stop and strong muzzle. Bite ok. Strong neck flowing into a sloping top line. A little short in upper arm and currently slightly longer cast. Spring of rib and good hind angulation. Short correct tail and set. Needs to settle on the move but loving his day, Happy puppy. Moved out in profile and when he pulled it together had reach. lovely crisps Pepper and salt coat and good presentation. Good bone through to feet Shows promise. BPD

Shoulder placed well sloping top line and holds on the move. would like more spring of rib but has some depth. Well let down hock hock and short loin. Miniature Schnauzer Critique
Being a admirer of the English dog scene, it is always an honour to be invited to judge here. To be invited to judge Miniature Schnauzers for the second time with CCs is an even greater privilege. I would like to extend my warmest thanks to the club and its committee for the invitation and for looking after me so well. My two ring stewards made my time in the ring a real pleasure, ensuring that everything I needed was to hand, so a big thank you to them for a thoroughly enjoyable day. I would also like to thank all the exhibitors. I was very humbled to learn that this was the second largest entry this year, second only to Crufts. Thank you for entrusting me with your dogs.
Back to business. Although the standard does not use the word “elegant”, the true Schnauzer type, to me, combines a robust, sturdy build with just enough length and clean lines to carry a certain elegance of its own. It should not be stuffy or heavy, but neither should it become overly elegant and stylished. I therefore hope you will allow me to use the word “elegant” in my report with this meaning in mind.
I felt that most of the dogs entered on the day fell well within this balance and were also generally good for size. When I last judged the breed, at Birmingham National in 2022, I found size to be more of an issue, with some exhibits not appearing quite as “miniature” as I would like. I have a particular fondness for long, classical heads and, although I could have wished for a little more length in many cases, I nevertheless found a good number of heads with pleasing balance and parallel lines.
One point I did find a little troubling this time was the grooming. Some exhibits were, even for my taste, over-groomed. A Schnauzer should always be in balance and moderate in all respects, and this includes grooming and presentation. Overall, jackets were generally harsh, and I am well aware of the work that goes into achieving and maintaining that.
Leg furnishings have long been a topic of discussion, but the standard calls for “harsh hair on legs. Furnishings fairly thick but not silky.” While they are never expected to be as harsh as on the body, the desired texture should come from stripping out the softer coat and allowing the harsher hair to grow through, not from the use of too much spray and chalk. A few dogs had very good natural hind angulation, yet for some reason it seemed the groomers had added “layers” of coat, spray and chalk to create a more exaggerated appearance. As with everything else in the breed, moderation is the key: moderate and always in balance but never dull. I was very pleased to find that my principal winners embodied exactly this – true quality in moderation, with the desired balanced outline and correct action on the move.
Baby Puppy Dog (3 Entries, 1 Abs)
A pleasing start to the day, with both present being very typical Miniature Schnauzers of four months, happy and outgoing as they should be.
1st: MATHER Mr & Mrs D & K, Benningholme Don Fernando.
A well-balanced youngster who held his outline both standing and on the move, strutting round the ring with plenty of confidence. Promising head with dark eyes and well-placed ears giving a very alert expression. Neck of just the right length to carry the head proudly. Very promising body with good spring of rib, although I would not have minded a slightly longer ribcage. Moderately angulated in front, very well angulated behind. Moves with energy and style. Really promising colour, with the desired grey blending well down into the leg furnishings.
2nd: MATHER Mr & Mrs D & K, Benningholme Biker Boy.
Another very pleasing puppy, and I especially liked his compact, sturdy body. Well-shaped head with promising strength and length, and nicely shaped ears. Strong neck flowing cleanly into a very promising body with really good spring of rib. Balanced angulation front and rear. I would like to see a little more leg under him as he grows on, which should give him an even better overall balance, also on the move.
Minor Puppy Dog (2 Entries, 0 Abs)
1st: BECKSON Mrs T, Wlanimu’s Marked For Greatness (naf) (taf).
Six-month black/silver of very pleasing size and substance. Suitably compact for his age, with the desired combination of strength and elegance. Very promising head, dark, sparkling eyes giving a cheeky look, even if the ears are not quite settled yet. Neck of just the right length, flowing nicely into a strong topline. Enough body for his age. Could have a shade more angulation behind, but he uses what he has well on the move. Very nice colour, with the grey shadings carried well down into the legs. Moves in good balance. BPD & BPIB
2nd: PIKE, PIKE, WOODS & WOODS Mrs, Mr, Miss & Miss G S R & L, Penbro Seize The Day at Elvisah.
The bigger of the two. Stylish youngster, but a little up on the leg at present. Needs to come down into his angulation with time, which I am sure he will. Masculine head of sufficient length, dark, forward-set eyes and correct bite. Ears not quite settled yet, but well placed on the skull. Strong neck of good length, clean shoulders and an excellent body shape. I would have liked a little more angulation in both front and rear, and he still needs to settle on the move. Very nice coat and colour.
PUPPY DOG (3 Entries, 0 Abs)
1st: FLETCHER Ms T, Samavai Spiros.
11‑month pepper/salt. In the initial line-up he did not immediately catch my eye, being quite moderate with nothing flashy or overdone, but once on the move his qualities really came into their own. His balanced angulation front and rear gave him very pleasing, harmonious reach and drive, and he was then hard to overlook. Very classical head of good length with dark, well-shaped oval eyes. Well-placed and carried neck which could be a shade longer to give an even better balance to the outline when standing. Good spring of rib, nice feet. Tail a little tightly carried over the back. Very promising coat and colour.
2nd: MCGARRIGLE Mrs E, Wlanimu’s Luck Favors The Bold (Imp UKR).
9‑month black/silver. Smart and compact, a very typical Schnauzer in both model and outline. Very nice size, somewhat smaller than the first. Strong head of good length, dark eyes and excellent ear placement. Strong neck of sufficient length. Strong body with just the right length of leg under him to give the desired balance. Good tail set, though I would prefer a better carriage of tail. Very nice colour, but I would like to see more structure in the coat with time. Still needs to settle in front on the move.
Junior Dog (3 Entries, 1 Abs)
1st: LOWTON & HUMPHRIES Mr & Mrs A & S, Lumillion Crazy In Love.
Very smart and stylish boy; would not want more elegance in his lines for fear of losing the sturdy Schnauzer look. Very nice size. Head of good length; to be critical he could have a little more stop, but the dark, well-shaped, alert eyes combine with well-shaped ears of correct size to give a very keen expression. Very nicely arched neck flowing into well laid-back shoulders and a firm topline. Nicely rounded ribs giving just the right substance for his size. Well-constructed rear, but I would prefer a slightly tighter and less extreme trim and grooming. Very nice harsh jacket with good pepper and salt colour. Easy, balanced mover.
2nd: FISH Miss K, Amorevita Blurred Lines For Riesenheim.
A stronger, more substantial male than the winner, with a very pleasing outline. Liked his combination of strength without losing the breed-typical “elegance”. Strong head which could, however, carry a little more length, but dark, sparkling eyes and nicely placed ears give a typical expression. Strong neck of sufficient length. Balanced angulation front and rear. I would not like more spring of rib on him and, coming and going, the body substance gives a slightly wider front than ideal. Effortless side gait with good reach. Solid black colour and very good coat quality. Excellent tail set and carriage.
Post Graduate Dog (4 Entries, 2 Abs)
1st: COCKERHAM Mr & Mrs S & M, Yakuza Mr Brightside.
A really eye-catching example of the compact Schnauzer type. Well balanced, with the size and length of head matching the rest of the dog. Excellent expression, although the well-placed ears are a little heavy. Strong neck with a nicely placed shoulder. A better layback of upper arm would bring the front more under the dog on the move. Well-shaped body with correct spring of rib and a ribcage of sufficient length. Nice tail set, although the tail is carried a shade too tightly over the back. Well angulated rear. Lovely coat quality, but I would like the colour to be a little cleaner.
2nd: BECKSON Mrs T, Tammux After Dusk.
Black/silver, built on longer lines and more up on the leg than the winner. Very stylish on the move, but should not be more elegant than this. Head of moderate strength and length. Nice, though somewhat large, ears. Elegant, well-arched neck of good length. Nicely angulated front, strong topline and well-sprung ribs. Nicely angulated rear. Tail somewhat tightly curled over the back. Attractive colour on both body and leg furnishings, but I would prefer a little more texture and structure to the coat.
Limit Dog (8 Entries, 1 Abs)
1st: ATTERBURY Mrs E, Wlanimu’s Empire Is Ukraine (Imp UKR).
Black/silver of very pleasing Schnauzer type. Nicely balanced with good strength all through. Masculine, strong head; although the eyes are a little light, the combination of head shape and ears gives him an alert expression, clearly eager to know what is happening next. Strong neck. Well angulated in front and rear. Very nice tail set and carriage. Correct coat and colour. Very well-balanced and effective side gait, though he could use his hocks a little more positively on the move. Somewhat wide coming and going.
2nd: SEARSON Mrs T, Traphens Colossus.
A more moderate dog in outline. Head of the desired length in relation to body, but could be a little deeper to give a more balanced silhouette. Excellent ears and dark, oval eyes give a pleasing expression. Strong neck and very nice body. Moderately but evenly angulated front and rear, though the front could have a little more layback. Well-set tail, carried a bit tight over the back. Excellent coat quality on the body, with somewhat softer leg furnishings. Very nice colour. Typical, very alert Schnauzer temperament, always making the most of his qualities in the ring.
Open Dog (4 Entries, 1 Abs)
1st: 120 WOODS & WOODS Miss & Miss R & L, Penbro Walking On Sunshine.
A high-quality male. Although not the most flashy or extreme in outline, his soundness, balance and compact body give him a very typical and natural breed type. Moderately angulated in front and rear, but he uses his construction extremely well on the move. Masculine head, with sparkling dark eyes and well-placed ears giving a very keen expression. Neck is not the longest, but is nicely arched and carries the head proudly on the move. Well-placed shoulders flow into a strong back and a body with a very pleasing spring of rib. Tail is somewhat tightly curled, but the tail set itself is very good. Very sound, well-constructed rear. His moderation and classical Schnauzer type, combined with a harsh coat, also on the legs, made this his day. Very happy to award him the CC and later BOB, and pleased to learn this was his crowning one. Seeing him later in the day also take Best in Show at this show only confirmed his overall quality and true breed type.
2nd: BRAITHWAITE Mr T, CH Wellingley Won For The Road.
Another high-quality dog. A little taller, with more leg under him than 1, built on slightly longer lines with a more elegant outline. Strong, masculine head of very good length, with well-placed ears. Excellent arched neck and strong topline. Well-set tail, although carried a little tightly over the back. I would have liked a touch more angulation in front to balance his well-angulated rear. He has a very smart, harsh jacket, but could have a little more structure to the leg furnishings. Moves with good reach and drive.
Champion Dog (2 Entries, 0 Abs)

Strong male with a pleasing outline, standing well balanced over his body. Very alert, typical Schnauzer expression. Strong head of sufficient length; although the eyes are somewhat rounded, the overall expression is keen and assertive. Strong, well-carried neck and good shoulder. His somewhat steep upper arm makes him a little light and “steppy” in front on the move. Excellent body, with balanced angulation behind. Very clean coming and going. He has a very harsh jacket, but I would prefer a little more salt-and-pepper in the colour. Well-deserved RCC today.
2nd: DAVIDSON Mrs K, CH Wellingley Wot A Mix.
Another high-class representative, very typical of the breed with a well-balanced outline, strong neck, topline and body. Nicely angulated, though I would like to see him use his angulation a little more on the move. Very good coat and colour. Would prefer a somewhat stronger, deeper head to give an even better overall balance to the outline. Moved with a nice side gait, sufficiently stable front on the move. Excellent harsh coat and texture very naturally presented.
Baby Puppy Bitch (5 Entries, 2 Abs)
1st: GREENOUGH Ms H, Tammux Obscured By Flower.
A little black/silver star in the making? She entered the ring with confidence, looking like a grown-up in a smaller size, so well put together for her age. Very confident and outgoing, alert and curious about everything happening in the ring. Very pleasing outline with a lovely neck and body, and a well-angulated rear. Already stands and moves like a little professional. Time will, of course, tell if she keeps this shape and balance as she grows, with still a lot of development to come, but nothing took away from her star quality in the ring today. BBPIB
2nd: MATHER Miss D, Benningholme Whatz Up Danelbeks.
Another very promising puppy with much to like, and more in the shape and form one would expect at this age. Very promising head with a cheeky, “naughty” expression, ready for mischief. Well-placed ears with a nice lift at the base. Moderately strong, good-length neck. On the day, a very typical puppy belly makes her appear a little heavier in overall outline, also on the move. Nicely angulated at both ends and a very nice prospect for the future. Moves well when she chooses, already showing that very charming Schnauzer independence and naughtiness.
Minor Puppy Bitch (7 Entries, 1 Abs)
1st: COLLINS Ms R, Jansad Pretty Amazing Grace.
A sturdy pepper/salt, a shade heavy in overall impression but still feminine, of very good type, size and outline. Strong head with excellent length and good skull substance, though the skull is somewhat rounded in shape. Strong neck and well bodied-up for her age. Normally angulated at both ends and uses her angulation well on the move. Very honest coming and going. Lovely harsh jacket with promising colour. BPB
2nd: FISH Miss K, Riesenheim Rerite The Stars.
One I really liked in the line-up and on the table, showcasing a classical breed type and very well put together. Well-formed head of suitable length with dark eyes and an alert expression. Good length of neck. Well-angulated front with a very nice forechest. Well-shaped ribcage, strong back, though the croup is somewhat rounded. Normally angulated behind with low hocks. Really good black colour and promising coat structure. Today she was not very focused in the ring and did not quite show on the move what I feel she is capable of. With a little more concentration and ring training, she could well be the winner another day.
Puppy Bitch (5 Entries, 0 Abs)
1st: WHITE Miss D, Schnaustar Edge Of Glory.
A quality bitch whose overall virtues and typical outline won her this class, although I would prefer a better tail. Strong yet feminine head of sufficient length, with just the right amount of stop, well placed between dark, oval eyes. Strong, well-carried neck, nicely defined withers, well-placed shoulder, though somewhat steep in upper arm. Very nice spring of rib and a strong back. Moderately angulated behind. Very nice harsh jacket, a little dark in colour. Clean on the move coming and going, with good reach in profile.
2nd: FISH Miss K, Riesenheim Rerite The Stars.
Seen before. Although she moved better in this class than earlier, she was still rather distracted by something outside the ring and did not show her best. She should improve with age and a little more training.
Junior Bitch (6 Entries, 1 Abs)
A somewhat challenging class to judge, where those with the best outline and balance in the line-up did not always show their qualities fully on the move, and vice versa. Judging is very often a question of compromise, and this was one of those occasions; on another day the order might well have been different.
1st: COPPER Mrs R, Copellastar Go With The Flo.
This bitch really showed her best qualities on the move, where everything came together with very nice balance and drive. Good substance for her size and a very pleasing outline. Strong head of the required length. Could have a slightly more generous neck, but she uses what she has well to enhance her outline. Moderate but balanced angulation. Strong body, with a well-carried tail on the move. Coat could be harsher and I would prefer cleaner colour.
2nd: GODDARD Mr B, Cheantake Especially for Wellingley (Imp FIN).
One I was drawn to immediately as she entered the ring. She has such a natural appearance, with very pleasing balance and outline; feminine without being too light, and strong without being too heavy. Although her colour could be cleaner, the coat is very natural, with a harsh jacket and good structure to the leg furnishings. Feminine head of good length, which could have a little more depth. Sadly, she did not show the best of her qualities on the move today. With movement more settled, she should develop into a very nice representative of the breed.
Post Graduate Bitch (8 Entries, 1 Abs)
1st: MORRIS Ms A, Tammux Dream Hack.
Very elegant black/silver of lighter build. Very pleasing frame with sufficient substance for her size and good length of leg under her. Strong head with well-placed ears and dark eyes giving a smart expression. Excellent length of neck, nicely arched, leading into a correctly, slightly sloping topline and good spring of rib. Moderately and evenly angulated front and rear. Moves with good reach and nice stability coming and going. Lovely harsh coat and pleasing colour.
2nd: BECKSON Mrs T, Wlanimu’s Jointly To Your Success with Tammux (Imp UKR).
Smaller bitch and, ideally, I would like her a little more up on the leg, but she is very feminine and well put together. Head with well-shaped skull, though I would prefer a slightly stronger foreface. Well-placed ears. Uses her neck very well, both standing and on the move, which gives her a proud appearance. Nicely defined withers and a strong back; could be a touch shorter in loin. Balanced angulation and very sound on the move.
Limit Bitch (6 Entries, 2 Abs)
1st: MCDONALD Mr J, Risepark First Lady of Heibri JW.
Very smart and eye-catching, both standing and on the move. Feminine head of good length, with dark, well-shaped eyes and just the right strength of muzzle to balance the headpiece. This, combined with well-placed, well-used ears, gives a very keen, typical expression. Nicely arched neck of good length, which should not be any more elegant. Clean shoulder with sufficient return of upper arm. Well-placed and well-carried tail. Normally angulated behind. Very nice harsh jacket with attractive colour and nothing overdone on the leg furnishings. Very nicely presented and well-handled throughout, though she is still a little unsettled in front assembly and can lose her topline slightly on the move. To complete the picture she could carry just a fraction more substance, which I am sure will come with time. Very happy to award her the BCC today – her first, I understand, but I am sure not her last.
2nd: COPPER Mrs, Mr & Miss R G & R, Mary Wells around Copellastar.
A girl of more substance, very nice to go over. Head of good length with a very alert expression. Strong neck, sloping nicely into well-marked withers and a strong back, the topline finishing in an excellent tailset and carriage. Body of good substance, though I would not want more spring of rib on her. Moderate but balanced angulation front and rear. Very nice, harsh coat on the body. Very stable and sound on the move.
Open Bitch (5 Entries, 1 Abs)
1st: COPPER Mrs R, Violis Poetic Haiku for Copellastar JW.
Smart bitch of good substance with pleasing, near-square proportions. Not overly angulated, but everything comes together very well on the move. Classical head of good length, narrowing nicely from the moderately broad skull to a sufficiently strong muzzle; this, together with well-placed ears, gives a very pleasing expression. Neck of good length and strength. Strong topline, moderately broad chest and good spring of rib. Very pleasing tailset and carriage. Very nice harsh jacket on the body with good structure to the leg furnishings. Lots to like. Happy to award her the RCC today.
2nd: WOODS & WOODS Miss & Miss R & L, Penbro Phizzazz.
A very elegant and eye-catching girl. Very balanced in outline with good substance all through. Feminine head of good length. Very nice neck, cleanly set on the shoulders and flowing into a strong topline. Moderately angulated in front. Today she was a little unsettled on the move, especially in front. Very nice harsh jacket, with somewhat softer leg furnishings. The winner had the edge on the move today.
Champion Bitch (4 Entries, 1 Abs)
1st: LONGDIN Mrs E, Wellingley Won Way To Go.
Very well balanced and of a really pleasing size, with a nicely proportioned outline. Head of sufficient length and strength, with well-placed, well-carried, though somewhat large, ears. Very nice neck and topline. Body substance that suits her size. Stands naturally in a good balance, nicely angulated behind. Smart, harsh jacket on the body, could have a little more structure on the legs. Well-placed and well-used tail.
2nd: WOODS Miss R, CH Penbro Talk Of The Town JW.
High-class bitch with pleasing, square proportions. Very nice length of head with a strong skull, moderate stop and dark, oval eyes giving a keen expression. Strong neck and body with a very nice topline; does not need any more spring of rib. Excellent harsh jacket and very good colour. Moves with good reach and drive in profile, though she could be a little more stable coming and going.
Veteran Bitch (2 Entries, 0 Abs)
1st: KRIEGER Mrs E, Schnaustar Black Pearl.
Veteran of nice size and substance, who could be a shade shorter in body. Head of moderate length with dark, sparkling eyes; ears a little light, but she has a very alert expression. Strong neck, which she uses well. Good spring of rib. Harsh coat on the body and quite clean in colour. Moves with good reach. BVIB
2nd: LOCK & DENNING Mr & Ms R & C, Lockenstox Opal Gem.
Short and square in body proportions and of very good size. Her long body coat gives a somewhat heavier overall impression. Head of moderate length with good substance and a friendly expression. Strong neck flowing into a sufficiently strong topline. Moderately angulated in front and rear. Excellent coat quality and very nice colour. Very nice tailset and carriage. Moves with plenty of energy but could make a little better use of her angulation on the move.
SPECIAL CLASSES
Black/Silver (4 Entries, 2 Abs)
Both placed and critiqued previously.
1st: MCGARRIGLE Mrs E, Wlanimu’s Luck Favors The Bold (Imp UKR).
More body and the better mover here.
2nd: BECKSON Mrs T, Tammux After Dusk.
A little lighter in body and narrower coming and going.
Black (4 Entries, 1 Abs)
(Not previously critiqued.)
1st: ATTERBURY Mrs E, Black Baccarat.
A little heavy in appearance, but a sound dog underneath. Nice, honest dog. Head of good length with a nice skull. Short, strong neck, strong back. Moderately angulated and uses his construction well on the move. A little too much coat makes him appear heavier than he really is.
2nd: KRIEGER Mrs E, Phyllberry A Star Is Born.
Neat model of good size. Slightly shorter in head and rounder eyes give a somewhat foreign expression. Elegant neck, solid body. Moderately angulated. Moves with ease.

Junior Handling Critique
Junior Handling 5-10 yrs. (2)
Both youngsters were very attentive, showing their dogs with a great deal of enthusiasm and deserved the applause that they received from the ringside.
1.Rosa Stanfield. Excellent young handler that I could not fault from the time that she entered the ring with her Miniature Schnauzer. She presented the dog expertly during the initial inspection and on the table. Always moved her dog at the correct pace and presented it to the judge. Best junior handler.
2.Lily-May Lowe. A young handler, initially reticent, who tried very hard with her Schnauzer. Presented her dog well for inspection, needs to move slightly quicker. Gained in confidence during the class. A little more practice and I am sure that she will get there.
